General Membership Meeting

I.                   Meeting called to order by President Geoff Tupper at

II.                Minutes from December 8, 2009 approved by membership

III.             Guests in attendance

a.       Ryan Wynne introduced Don Pratten who is a new associate at his endodontic office.  Don has been in practice for a number of years and recently sailed single handed to New Zealand.

b.      Cathy Smith announced that she and Tara Schmidt will be out on maternity leave soon and some of their staff will be available to fill in at other offices if needed.  Call (360) 676-0760

c.       Bobby Kylsea from the Skagit County Community Action agency gave a brief appeal for volunteers for the Dental Van.  The Van serves low income adults and needs volunteers Mon – Fri, .

VI.             Membership Committee Report – Kurt Swanson

a.       Dave Baker is transferring from Snohomish County

b.      2nd Readings for Victor Mak, and Nathan Bird voted on and approved my membership

VII.          Midwinter Meeting report – Darcie Morris

a.       Lakeway Inn – February 5th, 8 CDE hours available

b.      Several mini lectures in the morning to be repeated 2x

c.       Afternoon speaker is Dolphine Oda, UW oral pathologist.  Topic Oral Cancer, Red and White lesions: emphasis on standard of care.

d.      Need registrations by Friday January 22

e.       6 vendors signed up

IX.             New Business

a.       Request for $2,000 donation to the Skagit Children’s Museum for Children’s Dental Health Month was voted on and approved by membership

b.      Proposal for $2,000 donation to Whatcom County Boys and Girls Clubs was voted on and approved by membership

X.                Dental Action Day – January 29th, Olympia

a.       Derek Damon has volunteered to drive a 7 person van down.  Contact Derek to arrange a ride.

XI.             Derek Damon introduced Dennis Hoofnagle as our speaker.

a.       Dennis gave a presentation on the NW Precedent – a Practice Based Research Collaborative in Evidence-based Dentistry.

                                                              i.      NW Precedent covers Montana, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and Arizona

                                                            ii.      Operated jointly by UW and OHSU

                                                          iii.      Principles of Practice-Based Research

1.      Identify topics of interest to practitioners

2.      Design studies that are straightforward w/ simple clinical endpoints

3.      Carry out studies with minimal interference to everyday practice

4.      Evaluate the clinical effectiveness of technique/material

                                                          iv.      Currently 332 active members, 190 of are fully trained and can enroll patients in their offices

                                                            v.      Members can pick and choose which studies they want to be involved in.

                                                          vi.      All practitioners interested in research are encouraged to join

XII.          Announcements – Geoff Tupper

a.       Dick Tucker Sr. has been laid up lately and I’m sure would welcome a call or card.

b.      In March we will be accepting nominations for Secretary/Treasurer
